What is recruitment in anatomy?
In anatomy and physiology, recruitment refers to the process by which the body increases the force of a muscle contraction by activating additional motor units.

What is a Motor Unit?
A motor unit consists of:
- One motor neuron (nerve cell)
- All the muscle fibers controlled by that neuron
When a motor neuron sends a signal, all the muscle fibers in its motor unit contract together.
How Recruitment Works
The body does not activate all motor units at once. Instead, it recruits them gradually according to the amount of force needed.
For example:
- Lifting a pencil: Only a few motor units are activated.
- Lifting a heavy suitcase: Many more motor units are activated to generate greater force.
This process of activating additional motor units is called motor unit recruitment.
Types of Recruitment
- Spatial Recruitment
- More motor units are activated.
- This increases the strength of the muscle contraction.
- Temporal Recruitment (Rate Coding)
- Motor neurons fire more frequently.
- The muscle fibers contract more forcefully because they have less time to relax between signals.
Size Principle of Recruitment
Motor units are recruited in a specific order:
- Small motor units (slow, fatigue-resistant fibers) are activated first.
- Medium motor units are activated next.
- Large motor units (powerful, fast-fatiguing fibers) are activated last when high force is required.
This is known as the Size Principle, which helps the body use energy efficiently.
Example
Imagine performing a bicep curl:
- At the start with a light weight, only a few small motor units are active.
- As the weight increases or the muscle becomes tired, the nervous system recruits more and larger motor units.
- This allows the muscle to continue producing the necessary force.
Importance of Recruitment
Recruitment is important because it:
- Controls muscle strength precisely.
- Allows smooth and coordinated movements.
- Conserves energy by using only the motor units needed.
- Helps muscles adapt to different physical demands.
Summary
Recruitment in anatomy (more specifically, muscle physiology) is the process of increasing muscle force by activating additional motor units and/or increasing the frequency of their activation. It enables muscles to perform tasks ranging from delicate movements to powerful contractions.
