How to know if it’s a phone scam?

Phone scams can be tricky because scammers are getting more convincing. Here are clear warning signs that a call might be a scam:

🚩 1. They create urgency or fear

Scammers often say things like:

  • “Your bank account has been compromised.”
  • “You owe taxes and must pay immediately.”
  • “You’ll be arrested if you don’t act now.”
Legitimate companies never threaten you or rush you to make a payment or decision.

📞 2. They ask for sensitive info

If the caller asks for things like:

  • Your bank details, card number, or OTP
  • Your Aadhaar number, Social Security number, or password
…that’s a red flag. No real company or government agency will call you for that.

💰 3. They ask for payment in unusual ways

Scammers often demand payment through:

  • Gift cards (Amazon, Google Play, etc.)
  • Crypto or wire transfer
  • UPI links or QR codes sent over text

Legitimate companies don’t ask for money this way.

🕵️ 4. The number looks suspicious

Watch out for:

  • International or random-looking numbers
  • Numbers that look similar to official ones but are slightly off (called spoofing)
If unsure, hang up and call the company directly using the official number on their website.

💬 5. They refuse to give details

Scammers often:

  • Avoid giving their name, employee ID, or callback number
  • Get angry or defensive when you ask questions

A real agent will calmly provide verifiable details.

🔍 6. Too good to be true

If they promise prizes, loans, job offers, or lottery wins without reason, it’s almost certainly fake — especially if they then ask for a “processing fee.”

✅ What to do

  • Hang up immediately.
  • Don’t share any personal or financial info.
  • Block the number.
  • Report it (e.g., in India: https://cybercrime.gov.in ; UK: Action Fraud US: FTC Report Fraud
