More job scams starting to appear on TikTok
(WJAR) — Job scams have been around for years.
But now, fake listings are starting to pop-up in new places like TikTok.
Sharon Blatt Cohen, head of Marketing for cybersecurity company Guardio, says much like the job scams that have come before, these new TikTok job scams also seem too good to be true.
“TikTok obviously favors this viral, eye-catching content,” said Blatt Cohen. “So it really makes the perfect breeding ground for all these dream job scams.”
She continued, “Scammers know that these short and exciting videos that offer these flexible hours, $1,000 a week – these things grab attention.”
Blatt Cohen said these TikTok videos often include a link, where you can “apply” for one of these dream job.
In reality, the link often directs you to a malicious website.
But Blatt Cohen said that’s not the only way these job scams can work.
“Others can be jobs that you would need to buy equipment first and then you’ll get a job – no one really works this way,” she explained. “It’s just luring people in to get their money, their information.”
If you want to find out whether job is really legit, Blatt Cohen said go to the company’s real website and look at their list of open jobs.
If that dream job isn’t on the list, chances are it’s probably fake.
Blatt Cohen said good antivirus software will also block you from opening up many of these malicious websites.
