Petrol and diesel drivers warned ‘don’t pay at pump’ or risk losing money
A fraud expert has issued a warning to drivers after a rise in petrol station scams that could leave you out of pocket if you don’t know the ‘most common’ sign to look for
Drivers have been urged to pay inside at the petrol station and not at the pump following a surge in forecourt scams.
A fraud specialist has raised the alarm over fears motorists could be left significantly out of pocket. Fraudsters can use card skimmers to steal your card information and manufacture duplicate cards.
Motorists can safeguard their card details by opting for secure payment methods, including cash, digital wallets or contactless transactions. It comes after drivers are told they can cut car insurance ‘instantly’ by telling their insurer one thing.
A FICO study in the US from 2022 revealed a staggering 759% year-on-year surge in card skimming, with petrol station pumps being a favoured target for these skimming gadgets, reports Birmingham Live.
Paul Hampson, CEO of fraud and scam recovery firm CEL Solicitors, warned drivers: “These scams are designed to be virtually undetectable.
“Criminals install fake card slots or hidden chips that skim your details as soon as you insert your card. It’s fast, silent and can affect anyone who isn’t on high alert.
“The most common tactic is to fit a false front to the card machine, or place a tiny device inside the slot. Some will even hide miniature cameras to record your PIN. These devices can be installed and removed in under a minute.
“If anything looks suspicious, don’t take the risk. Go inside and pay at the counter instead. Many victims feel embarrassed they were caught out, but these devices are sophisticated and hard to spot. The fault lies with the fraudsters – not you.”
Petrol stations may be popular targets for card skimmers because there often aren’t nearby staff monitoring what someone does at the pump.
The criminals may also install small cameras or thin overlays on the keypad to capture what you type, it has been warned.
Mr Hampson added: “A quick check could save you hundreds. Drivers need to stay alert.”
It comes as drivers are told they can slash their car insurance costs immediately by revealing one crucial detail to their provider.
Used car dealer Swansway Motor Group explained: “Where you park your car can significantly impact your insurance premium.
“Parking on a driveway is often perceived by insurers as safer than street parking, which is more susceptible to theft and accidental damage.”
“Informing your insurer that the vehicle will be parked in a relatively safe location can lead to more favourable rates. It’s a simple adjustment that can have a meaningful impact on your costs.”
